This transformative investment will expand ATCC’s capacity to train the next generation of Diesel Mechanics and Professional Truck Drivers—critical workforce sectors for the state of Minnesota.
The Minnesota House of Representatives wrapped up its one-day special session on June 9 at 10:40 p.m., followed by the Senate, who adjourned sine die at 1:54 a.m. on Tuesday, June 10.
A $700 million bonding bill was passed, which included $84 million for Minnesota State: $60 million in asset preservation (HEAPR), and $24 million for ATCC’s Transportation Center project.
The new Transportation Center will serve as a modern hub for two of ATCC’s flagship programs: Diesel Mechanics and Professional Truck Driving. The facility will feature cutting-edge technology, simulation labs, and space for innovation in emerging fields such as electric and fuel cell vehicles.
“This project is a game-changer not just for our college, but for the entire state,” said Michael Seymour, President of ATCC. “It allows us to meet growing industry demand, expand enrollment, and ensure our students are trained on the latest technologies in transportation.”
The Diesel Mechanics program, established in 1966, is designated a five-star career by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), reflecting its high demand and strong job placement outcomes. The new facility will help eliminate waitlists and increase enrollment capacity, ensuring more students can access these high-demand careers.
“We are very excited about the new Transportation Center at ATCC as the demand for skilled technicians continues to rise across the industry,” said Ann LaPorte, Vice President of HR at Ziegler Companies. “The Transportation Center will undoubtedly increase the number of diesel technicians being developed in the region, which is imperative to the success of many contractors and dealerships like Ziegler Companies.”
The Professional Truck Driver program, established in 1973, is also designated a five-star career by DEED, with demand expected to increase by 5.8% in the next decade. As the only accredited truck driving program in Central Minnesota, and one of only four in the Minnesota State system, the Transportation Center will further strengthen its offerings and safety features by co-locating with Diesel Mechanics.
ATCC extends its deepest gratitude to the local legislative delegation for their unwavering support, especially Representative Mary Franson, co-chair of the House Bonding Committee. Her leadership and advocacy were instrumental in securing this critical funding.
“We are incredibly thankful to Governor Tim Walz, Representative Franson and our legislative partners for recognizing the importance of this project,” said Seymour. “Their support ensures that Minnesota remains a leader in workforce development and technical education.”
Construction on the Transportation Center is expected to begin in 2026, with completion anticipated in 2028.
